Showing posts with the label croissants

assorted, Mamie Clafoutis, Montreal

I forgot about going to Clafuti's in Outremont on a couple of occasions this past summer when I was staying nearby for a few days. Their upstairs space with free wi-fi is nice when it's not too busy, but I was quite disappointed by these sandwich offerings, especially considering how expensive they were. A smoked salmon offering on a brioche bun was skimpy on the fish, and a bit dry on the bun. And this sad pressed ham and cheese croissant was not worth any of my time. Considering a new bakery opened up a few doors down with much better sandwiches and service, and dare I say, a far superior croissant, I bid adieu, Clafoutis.

Thierry, Vancouver

I have only just began visiting this paradise on Alberni Street, and while I remain dumbstruck for their incredible macarons (I don't even have a sweet tooth, they are that good), I did notice a little croissant au jambon on display. Now upon further investigation, their cafe offers a range of sandwiches and even soups , and I will have to research further if I ever stop feeling flustered around the macarons. However, I did manage to pick up this croissant au jambon recently for documentation. Now a croissant itself is not a sandwich (see this for a fine croissant sandwich ), but what if a pile of fine ham was baked within with a crusty swiss cheese top? I am not sure I can convince myself, but each buttery salty mouthful made me wonder if this was not the next level of sandwiches. I know, this is a savoury baked good, but it's one of the best I have had the privilege of having.

Pastrami and pickles, Duchess, Edmonton

I got a new phone and went through my old phone to see if I missed anything. How did I miss this little gem? The pastrami and pickle sandwich at Duchess Bakery is one fine sandwich. The bakery is known for their use of butter, quality high end butter, and their croissants on their own are fantastic. But as anyone who has ever had a butter and pickle sandwich, a buttery croissant with a thick slice of pickle and very excellent pastrami is really a mouth watering temptation. I got the last one, if I recall, and it's nice to remember the good things that have happened.
