Grilled Cheese, Meat & Bread, Vancouver

A friend and I bumped into each other one sunny afternoon and instead of going to get that raw vegan power shake we've been texting about, we headed for Meat &Bread , which I have been to a few times . We had both been getting over different forms of illnesses, and while a power shake would have been great, life is short. However, I abstained from their meaty meat goodness and tried their grilled cheese, which I've always eyed, but never made a priority. Using crumbled aged cheddar with freshly shaved purple onion, it could have used another 60 seconds under the press. With bits of cheese unmelted and the onion not doing its job of bringing that sweetness to the mix, I only blame myself for getting the vegetarian option at a place called Meat & Bread. On the side was some form of bacon pea soup with kale. It was good.

Meatball & Ice Cream Sandwiches, Meat and Bread

Like a zombie I headed back to Meat and Bread after the porchetta experience. Going down the menu list, I went for the Meatball sandwich, though I was torn between this and the special of the day, which was basically a slow roasted spicy veal with arugula and aioli. My guest had the veal and I went for this monster. We did trade bites, but I don't recommend doing so, not because of germs, but because the art of handling a sandwich is to never let it go. I had difficulty corralling this after the mid way hand off, but the integrity of the sandwich held better than I could ever expect. As a treat, I opted for their ice cream sandwich, a bacon maple ice cream concoction between two syrup wafers. It was a good treat, but nothing I would crave, surprisingly. Pretty though, and pretty counts.

Porchetta with salsa verde, Meat & Bread, Vancouver

Meat and Bread opened up right around the time I started having health problems. One doesn't consistently blog about sandwiches without paying a price. I had to stop eating meat for a while, which was pretty shocking to my closest friends. I remember at the time a friend was taking a picture of the new window lettering when one of the owners came out and asked him what he was doing. My friend said he was taking a photo for his friend (me), who loved meat and bread. The owner smiled, but then my friend added that he was taking the photo because I couldn't eat meat and bread anymore. My health has improved since, but the association of Meat and Bread with health complications have been intertwined in my mind since. I have tried to go, but they also close at 5 and are usually lined up out the door. Today, at around 3 p.m., I finished a coffee meeting across the street and knew today was the day. The porchetta with salsa verde is the first choice, though I stood at the till watch...
