Sandwich scenes from Quebec City (conference style)

Desperate for some morning grease after a late night of who knows what, a couple of us from the conference wandered the extra block to get the good coffee at Les Brulerie Saint Roch . This sausage sandwich matin was nothing to write home about, nor was the service despite ordering en francais, but it was piping hot and held me over for a few hours, which is all it's suppose to do. And I needed to be held over as the conference lunch bags were filled with these ultra skinny sandwiches literally smeared with a bit of (tuna/veg pate/chicken salad). After eating one, I kept wondering where the rest of my lunch would arrive. It never did. This sad BELT was ordered and consumed at Gare du Palais,  Quebec City's wee train station. Taking an early train out, I held the mayo.

Turkey Club, The Grove, San Francisco

Whole pieces of freshly roasted turkey, made in house, thick and still sizzling crispy bacon that melts in your mouth like chocolate, mayo, crisp lettuce and real tomatoes. Yep, this is the real deal. I really appreciate when bacon goes into my sandwich hot. Other sandwiches on offer include a straight up BLT, Grilled Cheese, Steak Florentine and Pear and Gorgonzola, with loads of great desserts, beer and breakfast to boot. No one seemed shy about having a craft beer with lunch on a Saturday at noon. Felt a little chintzed by the tiny side bowls of chili, but I've had a very satisfying full bowl of that before, though it seems the recipe has changed since to include more rice or barley.  The Grove is across from SFMOMA and the Museum of the African Diaspora, making it the perfect museum lunch that's not actually in the museum.

Homemade BLT's - British style

I must be British now as these BLT's in the greenhouse were dished up with a heavy dose of homemade raisin chutney. A great acidic accompaniment to the greasy salty bacon and the blandess of the spinach (playing substitute here for lettuce) and chunky tomato slices. I added a dollop to the inside of the sandwich, and I must say it's actually better as a dipper than a spread. Thanks to R.G. for this very hearty breakfast, lunch, and dinner!

Madchester United

A quick stopover in Manchester equaled a lap around the airport through security and its shops and this new spicy BLT that Soho Coffee had to offer. This would be the first meal I have in the UK and certainly I would be reminded that "spicy" means something entirely different here. More sweet than anything else, I bid farewell to flavour with each passing bite as the plane once again reloaded for my journey into the North of Scotland.
